Aquarium Care Basics: How to Keep Fish Healthy (Beginner-Friendly)

A healthy aquarium is all about stable water conditions. If you’re new to fishkeeping, these basics will help you avoid the most common problems.

The 5 essentials

  • Tank size: bigger tanks are more stable

  • Filter: match it to your tank volume

  • Heater (for tropical fish): keep temperature consistent

  • Water conditioner: removes chlorine/chloramine

  • Test kit: monitor ammonia, nitrite, nitrate

Don’t skip cycling

Cycling builds beneficial bacteria that convert toxic ammonia into safer compounds. Rushing this step is the #1 cause of fish loss for beginners.

Simple weekly routine

  • Change 20–30% of the water

  • Vacuum debris from the substrate

  • Rinse filter media in old tank water (not tap water)

  • Test water parameters

If you share your tank size and fish type, we can suggest the right filter, food, and water-care products.
