How to Choose the Right Pet Shampoo (Dogs & Cats): Skin, Coat, and Flea Options

Human shampoo can irritate pets because their skin pH is different. Here’s how to pick a pet-safe shampoo that matches your dog or cat’s coat and skin needs.

Match shampoo to the problem

  • Sensitive/itchy skin: oatmeal or hypoallergenic formulas

  • Odor control: deodorizing shampoos (avoid harsh fragrances)

  • Flea/tick: use only vet-recommended products

  • Long coats: detangling/conditioning formulas

How often should you bathe?

Most dogs do well every 3–6 weeks, but it depends on coat type and lifestyle. Cats usually don’t need frequent baths unless advised by a vet.

Bathing tips

  • Brush before bathing to remove loose fur

  • Use lukewarm water

  • Rinse thoroughly (leftover shampoo causes itching)

  • Dry well—especially in cooler weather
